For the second year in a row, the boys will be heading to the state tournament after a 57-54 win over the Mount Vernon Bulldogs Feb. 19 at Mountlake Terrace High School. Glacier Peak senior Jack Bonner hit a game-high 19 points and senior Dylan Vargas’ three 3-point shots helped seal the win. During the previous night, the Grizzly girls also celebrated by cutting down the net after beating the Shorecrest Scots 62-55 in an overtime win at Lynnwood High School. Led by junior Katie Hawkins’ (team high 12.5 point average) 15 points, the Grizzlies (11-9 in the regular season) won their third straight post season game for the title. The girls entered the district tournament as the fourth place seed and defeated both Ferndale and Lynnwood to reach the title game against top seeded Shorecrest.

Held to only six points in the first quarter, and down by 20 at the half, the Panthers could not mount a rally as Mount Vernon took charge of the game. Senior Trevor Carlson led the Panthers with 15 points while Hamlin sank 12 points. In the following game on Dec. 3, the Panthers were again held to only six points in the opening quarter as they lost 42-33 to the Falcons in Woodinville. The bulldogs mounted a rally gaining a few points but in the end they couldn’t catch up. Scoring game high points went to Shorecrest’s Isiah Clevenger with 27 followed by Mt Vernon’s Chris Chaplin with 20 points. Meadowdale was led by Conner Hamlett’s 24 and their defense as they defeated Mt. Vernon in Thursday night’s semi-final district tournament game.  In the first half, Meadowdale’s defense held Mt. Vernon to only 11 points and took a 25-11 lead in to half time.  Mt. Vernon scored 21 of its 44 points in the 4th quarter but Meadowdale’s offense kept the scoring up and outscored Mt.
