Down by 33 points at the end of the third quarter, the Kamiak Knights girls basketball team were able to rally with 30 points in the final quarter but could not take the win as they lost to the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors 67-52 in a Wesco South game Feb. 3 in Mukilteo. Junior Kate Blackwell (10.2 point average) sank 15 points for the Knights while six foot senior Carrie Barnes shot nine points and grabbed ten rebounds. In spite of a 4-16 season, the Knights clinched the Wesco South’s number three seed and open the 4A District 1 playoffs against the Monroe Bearcats (12-8) Feb. 9 in Monroe. The Knights boy’s team finished the regular season with a 68-55 loss to Newport Feb. 4 in Bellevue. Junior Nicholas Kussman (team leading 14.1 point average) shot 12 points in the game.
Edmonds Stadium, Edmonds, Wa. – On the verge of clinching its first ever division title, Kamiak came up against a less than hospitable host in Edmonds-Woodway as it determined not to allow Lady Knights celebrate their WesCo 4A South crown on its home turf. Succeed they did as the Warriors earned a home conference victory 1-0 by mean of physical plays, most notably dished out by the tall and stout E-W senior defender Sophie Judd (#7,) that derailed Kamiak trademark one-two punch weapons of junior forward/midfielder Lauren Luke (#18) and senior outside mid Rachel Rinke (#5.)

Edmond’s Sophie Judd heads the ball away from kamiak’s goal

In the first half, both teams traded attacks and both had scoring opportunities with slight edge to Kamiak. Edmonds-Woodway Hack-a-Luke strategy started early and often and soon followed by Hack-a-Rinke that sidelined Knights senior midfielder for a good chunk of first half. E-W senior defender Sophie Judd was a force to reckon with and virtually singlehandedly warded off any potential Kamiak scoring threats. Meanwhile, Kamiak senior GK Tana Foster made a one-on-one save shortly before halftime to keep it even 0-0 at the break.

Edmond’s Cameron McCarthy and Kamiak’s Elizabeth Gross do battle over passing passing rights.

Both teams started off second half with renewed energy and took turn attacking one another’s goals with no fruition. Not until the 70th minute when E-W freshman midfielder Savanah Van Citters (#18) rainbowed one from the left off sophomore midfielder Lindsey Aranda (#8) and over Kamiak senior GK Tana Foster outstretch for Warriors 1-0 lead. With a sense of urgency, Lady Knights stormed back with waves of attacks that were turned away by the stout Warriors defense or offside calls. The closest Kamiak would come to forcing overtime was when senior midfielder Cassidy Seckman (#6) cross from the left sailed over E-W senior GK Kristin Lyshall, but ricocheted off the far post and back into the pitch.

Edmonds-Woodway (8-4-0 league, 9-5-0 overall) victory tightens the 4A South race with Jackson (8-4-0, 8-5-1 tie) being the closest challenger to Kamiak (10-2-0, 11-2-1 tie) supremacy, though only 6 points now separate these top three teams with only two remaining games. As evident by Jackson’s head coach Mike Bartley scouting in the stand tonight, this was a huge win for E-W and set the table for a potential division title game when Kamiak pays a visit to Jackson next game, Monday Oct. 25th, and depending on that outcome, could make Cascade game a must-win for Kamiak should it desire to savor its first ever WesCo South crown.

They were tied 21 each going into half time and after a scorless third quarter, Edmond’s Zack Berg ran in a pass from Tyler Brudevold for 7 points and then Kamiak tied it up with Quin Carlson completing a pass from Anthony Berg and then Ovetime saw Edmonds win the conflict with David Pikelny taking the ball across for the game winning touchdown. Edmonds-Woodway	14	7	0	7	6	—	34 / Kamiak	14	7	0	7	0	—	28. This was also Kamiak’s Homecoming game complete with homecoming court, king and queen and of course the kamiak showband, drill team and dulcineas. Click on images for slide show!

The warriors made several good runs for the goal in the 2nd half but were shutdown by goal keeper Tanna Foster. See video below for both goals. sam freeman/nwsnews

April 20, 2010, Mukilteo , Wa . – Playing in its third overtime game in the past four contest, Kamiak came away victorious 2-1 as senior Spencer Kienholz (#7) knocked one in the net after gathering a cross from the right from senior Tyler Hawkinson (#11) in the last minute of second overtime period.

Kamiak senior forward Spencer Kienholz (#7) races to the ball against Edmonds-Wooday freshman defender Alex Sakoi (#16,) junior defender Zach Sakoi (#18) and senior captain defender Landon Machado (#21) on the way to score a goal in the first half, but was called offside.

The game started off with a physical overtone with Edmonds-Woodway having slight edge in ball possession. Nevertheless the Knights provided a first serious threat at the 25’ mark as Tyler Hawkinson was fouled inside penalty box, but the penalty kick was blocked by Warriors junior GK Eric Whitney (#0.) A second threat would come 2 minutes later at 27’ mark as Spencer Kienholz beat two Warriors defenders down the field and punched one into goal, but a linesman signaled an offside and the goal was called back. In the second half, Edmonds-Woodway broke a scoreless tie with a goal from senior forward Jake Lagucik (#17) at 46’ mark with an assist from senior midfielder Ben Wilmot (#10.) Characteristically however, Kamiak came fighting back and clawed its way back for an equalizer at 70’ mark as senior forward Tyler Hawkinson cleaned up the mess at top of penalty box after several shots on goal from the Knights with the one prior delivered by junior midfielder Zach Faller (#19.) With the 1-1 tie, the teams entered first 5’ overtime and continued entertaining one another with consistent physical plays that saw a handful of injuries and collisions stoppage time. Warriors would put together 3 set pieces from the corner, but were fruitless in their attempts. The second OT period proved to be a dagger through Edmonds-Woodway heart as Kamiak senior tandem of Tyler Hawkinson and Spencer Kienholz connected for the game winner in second period of sudden death overtime. Junior GK Eric Whitney stood strong in goal for Edmonds-Woodway (2-2 league, 6-4-1 overall) while Junior GK Austin Porter earned the tough win for Kamiak (2-2-0, 5-4-2) in place of the injured senior GK Caleb Smith.
