Bearcats take top seed in Wesco North

After years of finishing at or near the bottom in the Wesco 4A, the Monroe Bearcat boy’s have finally taken the 4A Wesco North title with a nail biting 55-51 win over the Arlington Eagles Feb. 2, in Monroe. The Bearcats finished with a conference record of 12-3 along with Arlington and shares the title, but having won both games against the Eagles, the Bearcats will take the Wesco North’s first seed in the upcoming district tournament. “Honestly I’m pretty proud of the guys just because we have seen some dark days and to have them come through in a big moment is pretty neat,” Bearcats’ head coach Nick Wold said. The Bearcats went into the half Up by 12, only to see their lead evaporate as the Eagles out scored the Bearcats 19-8 in the third. Senior Slava Ulanovskiy was the hero of the game for the Bearcats as he led with a game high 20 points including four 3-point baskets. Defensively 6-foot-7 senior Cole Parker led with 12 rebounds while blocking five Eagle shots. The Bearcats (12-8 overall) will open the district tournament by hosting Cascade (3-17) Feb. 8. “We hope to progress further then just the first couple of games,” Wold said. “Our goal is to get all the way through.”

Kamiak 5 Arlington 0

September 30, 2010 -Mukilteo, Wa. - In front of an entertainingly enthusiastic home fan, undefeated Kamiak played host to Arlington (0-7 league, 1-7 overall) to the tune of 5-0 shutout victory. Kamiak first goal came at 12′ when senior midfielder Lauren Luke (#18) interior pass at top of penalty area connected with fellow senior midfielder Cassidy Seckman (#6) for the go ahead goal. Knights senior midfielder Taylor Stanley (#7) made it 2-0 when she redirected Rachel Rinke #5) corner kick from the left into the net.

Kamiak did not let foot off gas in the second half as Lauren Luke added 2 more unassisted goals for an insurmountable 4-0 lead and Seckman finished off where she started with the fifth and final Kamiak goal. Knights GK combo of Tana Foster and Emma Makela earned fifth shutout for Kamiak (7-0, 8-0-1 tie.)

In an earlier JV game, Arlington went up 1-0 at 50′. A would-be Kamiak equalizer came five minutes later when junior forward Ashley Brown (#10) scored off freshman forward Erica Tsoi (#3), but was called back by center ref due to blown whistle of an earlier Arlington foul. Kamiak finally made one count when junior midfielder Kayla Peth (#2) cleaned up a mess following a corner kick in the final extra time for an official 1-1 tie.

Kamiak shuts out Arlington 1-0 advances to District semi

May 10, 2010, Mukilteo, Wa. – Being the more dominant team in the 4A Northwest District quarter-final match, Kamiak scored the game lone goal at 33th minute as senior forward captain Tyler Hawkinson headed the ball into the back of the net from a Kyle Watts corner kick. The ball possession meter tipped heavily toward the home team and while the visiting Eagles continued to fight, the time was not on their side as the Knights of Kamiak (5-4 league, 9-6-2 overall) moved on to the next loser-out game against Jackson (7-2, 10-7.) Senior GK Caleb Smith earned a shutout for Kamiak while senior GK Cory Ferris stood in goal for Arlington (9-7, 9-8.)

District Girls Basketball – Edmonds-Woodway vs Arlington 02.26.2010

In the Girls 3rd berth to state / loser out game, at the end of the 1st quarter, Arlington was down by 14 making it hard for a comeback against a team like Edmonds-Woodway. The eagles came alive in the 2nd quarter and played solid ball with several rallies throughout the game, butÂ the warriors were definitely on top of their game last night with the final outcome 69 to 44. Edmonds Ashley Albertson had game high points with 20, followed by warrior Alex Kenny with 18. Points for Edmonds Woodway wer Albertson 20, Kenny 18, Donaldson 7, Woods 7, Kasper 7, Nash 3, Tanjo 1 Q1-20 Q2-21 Q3-8 Q4-20 T-69. District Girls Basketball – Arlington vs Monroe 02.23.2010

After the first basket of the game, Arlington fell behind until 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter when they tied, see-sawed, and pulled ahead to win 60-56. The Eagles move on to play Edmonds-Woodway on Friday the 26th at MPHS for the 3rd berth to state. Game high points went to Monroe’s Suzanna Ohlsen with 22 points. Points scored for Monroe were Ohlsen 22, Alexander and Clark at 9 each, Brazel for 7, Wilkins 4, Robertson 3, and Murphy 2. Q1-12 Q2-20 Q3 12 Q4-11 T 56. Taking high points for Arlington was Ginny Wilson with 17 followed by Ferr0 11, Van Loo and Kesselring with 10 each, Schmuck, Sarver and Grogan with 3 each, Evans 2 and Murrin 1. Districts Boys Basketball – Arlington vs Mountlake Terrace 02.20.2010

After defeating Arlington 68 – 62 in what was a hard fought game, the hawks will be moving on to play Jackson next wednesday, 24th, at Jackson at 6pm. Terrace came back strong in the 2nd half with Jacob Champoux scoring 16 of his 30 points total in the 2nd half of which 6 were 3 pointers and 10 for 10 in free throws. Point breakdown for the Hawks were Champoux 30, Karels 15, Snow 11, Johnson and Cano 5 each and Powell with 1. Districts 4A Girls Basketball- Arlington vs Kamiak 02.19.2010

Kamiak senior Natalie Stephens takes aim at the hoop as she drives around Arlingtonâ€™s Ginny Wilson in the first-half of the Knightsâ€™ 57-54 loss at the 4A District 1 tournament Feb. 19 in the Jim Linden Field House in Marysville. Down by one point at the half, the Knights were able keep pace with Arlington through much of the second half.Â A three-pointer by sophomore Kate Blackwell with less than 30 second left brought the Knights within three, and after stealing the ball, junior Lexi Burns attempted a three-point shot at the buzzer, which came up short. The Knights lost to Marysville-Pilchuck, Feb. 16 in the first round of the tournament putting them in the loser-out game against Arlington. Burns (team leading 11.0 point average) led the Knights with twelve points while junior Carrie Barnes added with nine points, as the Knights finished the season 9-13, 7-11 conference. Wrestling – Snohomish vs Arlington 1.21.2010

After 72 years, the last varsity athletic event was held Jan. 21 in the “Old Gym” at Snohomish High School. Originally known as the “Pit” because of the raised wooden bleachers that surrounded all four sides of the court, the timeworn facility opened its doors on Oct. 14, 138. In its heyday, the gym could seat 1,200 fans, said Mark Albertine, Snohomish School District athletic director. But after a building remodel in 1984 when the east and south side bleachers were eliminated for additional classrooms, the gym’s capacity was reduced to 600. The basketball and volleyball programs moved to the present main gym, with a capacity of 2,000 in 1983. The wrestling team, which began competing in the Old Gym in 1959, continued to calÂ it home until Jan. 21. The gym will continue hosting freshman basketball games through the rest of this year’s season and will be used temporarily as a library until the facility is demolished in 2012, as part of the school’s modernization project paid for by bond dollars. A new auxiliary gym currently under construction will open next year. Below, with the junior varsity wrestling match in progress, fans begin to arrive for the Jan. 21 varsity match. Girls Basketball – Arlington vs Cascade 01.07.2010

In what was an Eagles dominated first half, the Bruins came back to the court after half time aggressive and playing good ball. They outscored Arlington in the 2nd half but were unable to make up for the deficit they had going into half time. Arlington scored 17-10-8-11 for a total of 46 points to Cascades 10-6-12-12 for 40 points total. Danielle Love for Cascade took game high points with 22 followed by Aliya Davis 7, Devan Love 5 and Aimee Bergman and Haley Goff 3 each. For Arlington Quinn Kesselring put 10 points on the board followed by Megan Abdo 6, Lexi Sarven 6, Jessica Van Loo 4, Lauren Grogan 4, Kaiti Ferro 4, Stefanie Schmuk 4, Ginny Wilson 4, Alisha Murrin 2, Tiffany Daggett 2.
